Read and Reflect

How do you currently apply this strategy, with or without the use of technology?

This is another really hard area for me because I think by the nature of my classes, I use nonlinguistic representation all the time. I teach Web Design and Graphic Design classes, along with Marketing, Business Law and Media. I have to use examples and visuasl in each of my classes. The material presented in my classes is not really lecture based, it is more learning and experiencing the new things in a way that relates to what is going on in the world.

I have been through a training session with Marcia Tate. I know the importance of movement, music, and using different sources for learning. Putting it into practice in my classroom is an ongoing struggle for me. I cannot have a lot of movement because of the computers and accessories that risk being damaged when students are moving around. I allow students to listen to music privately but I do not use it throughout the room because I know that students have different needs when they work.

What new insights or ideas did you gain from the reading?

I need to be more aware of this part of learning in my classes. I think if I make a decision to treat it as a seperate element in my classroom, I will do a better job of helping my students to learn in the ways that each one learns best.

How might you use this tool in your classroom?

This site was easy to use and kind of fun. I really like the spiral view feature. I do a lot with Digital Storytelling in my classes and this is just another tool I can offer the students to use. Right now we use Windows Movie Maker most of the time because it is installed on all the school computers and the students use it in several classes. I really like this option though. It is a lot more basic which is really good for some applications. It reminds me more of PhotoStory which I want to use but cannot be loaded onto the school computers yet (hoping for next school year). Since this is Internet based it will be a great option!!!
